Stress can affect the whole body, the immune system, the brain and the hormonal system. In fact, it is a condition that arises when an individual is faced with a task or situation that may be beyond his or her capabilities and resources. At moments when the challenges and problems to be solved increase, the body reacts by triggering a stress response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since ancient times, the human body has developed specific mechanisms to cope with stress or avoid danger. In the brain, the hypothalamic-pituitary-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated, stimulating the release of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), triggering a response from the pituitary gland with adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases the heart rate and increases alertness, while cortisol promotes the release of glucose to make energy available to the body to ward off danger or overcome challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, continuous and prolonged exposure to stress can be harmful. Constantly elevated cortisol levels can cause a weakened immune system, making the body more susceptible to common illnesses and infections. And persistently high levels of cortisol in the brain can cause impaired cognitive functions such as memory and decision-making. Stress can also be linked to heart disease, digestive problems, sleep problems and even mental health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to emphasise that stress can manifest differently in different people and requires specific coping mechanisms.
